Natural Resources Canada’s Multi-agency Situational Awareness System (MASAS) project required the production of a WMS service providing a base map on which thematic data could be overlayed by public safety respondents.
Given that the existing base maps (commercial and government) were considered insufficient, Natural Resources Canada’s Multi-agency Situational Awareness System has used our services to reproduce the maps produced with ArcGIS, but using Mapserver.
The license restrictions, the server capacity and the available budgets resulted in using MapServer to be much more practical and economical to produce the maps. The clear objective of the MASAS project was to reproduce the same maps, using the same symbology from ArcGIS mapfiles by reusing all geographic information already used in WMS topographic maps already in place.
The results are convincing, and showed once again that MapServer’s mapping and styling capabilities are flexible and extremely powerful.
